What goes on in your mind?

CityStages presents Kathmandu a chillingly dark, sometimes comic, investigation of mental torment and its possible consequences.
Set in both "Life space" and "Mind space", we meet Rosalind, a self-harming fiancée who has no love for her intended and even less affection for his dog. Her mental antagonist is Owen. Brought up by his aunt Martha, a domineering dressmaker who haunts his mind, Owen is desperate for escape. Martha’s demon is Frank, the lover she had to leave to bring up Owen. Frank is no stranger to abandonment, however, as he left his wife and children many years ago. One child, Rosalind, will not leave his conscience alone.

Or does the tormentor become the tormented?

Written by Greg Freeman and directed by Ken McClymont, Kathmandu provides a visually stunning study of discomfort as the four damaged lives intertwine.

Greg Freeman explains: "Most of us suffer from the inability to shake off certain negative voices from the past. Whether it’s of someone close, an acquaintance or a complete stranger. We often internalise the comments or the experience and then re-present it in our heads, sometimes not always as it was. The mind plays tricks."

He continues: "I started to explore the possibility that the person whose taunting voice you hear in your head would have someone else’s mocking voice in theirs. I liked the irony of a circle of torment, where the first character heard a voice and the voice heard a voice and then the last voice heard the first."

Kathmandu premiered at the Menier Theatre and ran for ten performances. Recast and redesigned, this is the show’s, and the company’s, first time to the Edinburgh Festival.
